All Jazzed Up for Chicago Live in Manila 2014

"Come on babe, why don't we paint the town...and all that jazz?"

After penny-pinching  for months in the midst of recurring UP hell weeks, my bestfriend Julie and I at least have Sunday, December 14 to look forward to, as a reward for all our thesis-related woes and hardships.

Finally, Chicago the Musical Live in Manila!

But before getting all hyped up, what exactly is Chicago the Musical? We might have heard the show from the 2002 award-winning film starring Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but a quick Google search will reveal that the movie is not all there is to it.

As a globally-acclaimed long-running musical based on the lives and times of arguably one of the most iconic periods in American history, Chicago has been lauded as a slick and sassy satire that tackles the decadence, scandal and corruption of a period when female criminals were regarded as celebrities and the justice system is nothing more than a thoughtless, raucous media circus.

The original Chicago the Musical, set in Jazz Age Chicago year 1924, is based on the trials of the accused murder cases of two women, Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner which in turn gave them their celebrity status through the Chicago press.

Its film adaptation of the same name, as was mentioned above, was shown in 2002 and won 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture. Indeed, the superimposition of vaudevillian performances that delves in the delusions of the wannabe star Roxie Hart on the darker reality she faces presents a haunting juxtaposition of the criminal justice system and the glamor, scandal and sheer grandiosity of life onstage, which surprisingly, have several similarities.

This December, Chicago the Musical, starring an all-American cast, is coming to Manila from December 2- December 21 at the Solaire Theater. View the schedules and the ticket prices here:

I will totally blog about the actual show once we have seen it! :)
