Leche Puto: A Hybrid of Dessert from Quezon

Decadent looking custard topped with rich caramel syrup. You salivate even just by the smell of it.

Yes, it's leche flan, a classic Filipino dessert with egg yolks as its main ingredient.
Growing up, I would always secretly wish for a leche flan dessert in every gathering or party I attend to. I would crave for this dish on a typical day. I could even down a whole llanera of it in one sitting. Yes, that's the glutton in me talking.

But since it's a bit tasking and pricey to prepare, I certainly wish for a cheaper yet equally satiating alternative.

Thankfully, leche puto came to being!

Leche puto is a marriage of two Filipino favorites from the province of Quezon. The wickedly sweet caramel taste of the flan enhances the rather bland or buttery taste of the rice cake. It is a perfect match for coffee in the morning, or for juice or tea for the afternoon merienda. It is also an effective pasalubong for the family. Another good thing about it is that aside from the sweet rush, you also get to satisfy your hunger.

Do not be deceived by the angry name of this dish. Grab a box of these sweet offerings and be prepared for a sugar rush!

Leche Puto is available in pasalubong stalls in Sariaya and Tayabas, Quezon. It is often sold in boxes of 25.
